New research reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these medications should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
