Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
