Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against Newcastle.
